How to wreck a digital camera

I was meeting with a new client the other day... rode the bike to Hebron, KY for the meeting.  An hour into our time together, it started raining.  I did that momentary checklist in my mind... and no - nothing to worry about - I had my computer bag with me - so ... "let it rain" - or so I thought.

I have been taking pictures for a new project with my daughter's Nikon - its a Coolpix P80 - not top of the line by any means - but it was her grad present and I "borrowed" it for a couple of days.

Yep... the camera was in the bag on the bike.  Nope... the bag is NOT waterproof.  Yep - forgot that the camera was in the bag - for two days.  Nope... the camera is not waterproof.  Turns out it was sitting in a pool of water for around 48 hours.

Step 1:  Attempt to dry the camara out. - Done.

Step 2: Recharge the battery - Done.

Step 3: Turn camera back on. - Done - and nothing

Step 4: Let the camera dry out some more and hope your daughter doesn't notice. - Done - failed.  She saw the camera on the table in my office.

Five days later - the camera is dried out and it turns on!  The optics are shot, as is the electronics that controls the shutter.

So... we're camera shopping :)  The good news is - my daughter loves me and isn't heartbroken... (well duh - she's getting a new camera too LOL).
